Aboriginal and economic policy research PhD opportunity

PhD student

Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research

ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences

Canberra, ACT

The Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) at ANU has recently commenced a project in collaboration with the University of Queensland on ‘Improved Indigenous population projections for policy and planning.’ This project, which is to be funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC), will use qualitative and quantitative analysis to identify the processes involved in Indigenous identification; partnering of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples; births of children to Indigenous and non-Indigenous mothers; and internal migration.

As part of this project, a PhD Scholarship is available for study at ANU. Commencing in early 2014, this presents an exciting opportunity for a researcher with experience in economics, econometrics, demography, statistics or a related discipline to undertake independent research on a highly policy-relevant issue. Under supervision of the Chief Investigators on the project, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced academics, shape their own research agenda and build a career in academia or policy research.

The scholarship for this project is $29,500 per annum for 3 years, extendable by application to 3.5 years, comprised of:

  • An ANU PhD Scholarship at the APA rate (see the applicable Conditions of Award for further details of duration, eligibility and entitlements to leave and reimbursement).
  • A HDR Supplementary Scholarship.

Additionally funds are also available to cover travel, and research costs (such a fieldwork and conference funding).

As a PhD student within CAEPR and ANU, you will be able to work within a research-intensive environment covering a broad range of Indigenous and methodological issues while working under the guidance of senior and experienced researchers.
